Summer ends and school begins . . .

Message from Executive Director, Mike Wurm –

BGC_NickRossi_122_Hi-res_EditedSummertime is gone! Hard to believe, I know. It has been an incredible season full of fun and excitement for all. At our seven Summer Camp sites, Clubs carried record breaking numbers of kids. Staff worked hard to put together a ‘Fun with a Purpose,’ action-packed summer. At the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows, we keep kids learning throughout the year, so when summer is over, they are ready to go back to school without losing any learning momentum. Please take a moment to read in this newsletter how our Summer BRAIN GAIN strategy combatted summer learning loss through intentional programming.

This past June marked the one year anniversary of the opening of the William N. Pennington Facility on Foster Drive. The staff at our newest facility did a tremendous job of building a program the kids love attending. All summer, over 500 children and teens participated in a variety of programs and activities designed to keep them engaged and interested. We are thankful for the Pennington Foundation, as well as the many other local foundations, corporations and individuals for supporting this project. After only one year there is no doubt this was a necessary and needed addition to the community.

Also, our mission to ‘reach the kids that need us most’ continues in our newest project. Over a year ago, we took over the operations of the Project Solution property on Bresson Avenue in Reno. Currently, we are exploring options to convert this property into a Boys & Girls Club. While much work has to be done, this facility has the potential to have the same impact on its community as the facility on Foster Drive. Please look for future information on how you may be able to help with this much needed project.

With the start of the new school year upon us, we are excited to change gears back to before and after school programming. We take our role of educational support for the Washoe County School District very seriously and are looking forward to helping kids complete their homework, organize their back packs and be prepared to go back to school every day.

The Fall season also means more fundraising for the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. In this newsletter, you can read about how to get involved in the annual Microsoft Golf Tournament being held at Red Hawk Golf and Resort on Friday, August 21, the 2nd Annual Vintage Eldorado Italian spirts tasting event on Thursday, October 8, the Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, November 5 and our Barrels & Bites wine and spirits tasting event held at the Peppermill on Friday, November 13. We also will be kicking off our annual giving campaign It Just Takes One (IJTO) in September, so please do what you can to participate in these activities and campaigns. Without your support, we could not impact the lives of our children every day.

Again, please take a few minutes to look through the Summer edition of the Club Chronicle. I think you will be happy to see how your support is changing lives in the Truckee Meadows!

Macy’s Thanks for Sharing Program Helps Fund Afterschool Education

Macy’s continues to be an important partner for the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows and its education programs. Their contribution through the Thanks for Sharing program will help fund the afterschool education programs that benefit more than 1,000 kids every day throughout Reno, Sparks and Fernley.

Thanks for Sharing debuted as a national Macy’s initiative in 2003 – a distinctive effort from which customers benefit during the holiday season and charities benefit throughout the year. Customers join the program for $25, and in return, they receive a Reward Card valued at 10 percent of all their Macy’s credit card net purchases made during the holiday period. Plus, for each Thanks for Sharing customer enrollee, Macy’s donates $10 to great charities like the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. Learn more at
