Reno Jets Boxing
Boxing: A Northern Nevada tradition with roots at the Boys & Girls Club
Northern Nevada is a storied place, rich with the history of determined people staking their claim during the western expansion, mining booms and even the establishment of gaming. Perhaps it is because the region has attracted so many hard-scrabbled pioneers that we also have such a rich history of boxing.
Generations of boys – and now girls – have grown up boxing in gyms around the Truckee Meadows, and many of them studied under the Tavares family. For decades, the Tavareses were synonymous with youth boxing in several programs.
Sadly, Thelma Tavares passed in 2010, but the family tradition her late husband started lives on at the Tavares Gym inside the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows’ Ninth Street location. Here, boys and girls of all ages practice with skilled instructors, while participants get an opportunity to compete with other clubs in the region and beyond.
And the Reno Jets is more than a program that hones skills, develops athletes are gives kids an outlet to stay fit. It is a place where children also learn important lessons about character and discipline.
