Thankful for your continued support . . .
Message from Executive Director, Mike Wurm
Fall is upon us and the leaves are beginning to turn. This always evokes thoughts and feelings about friends and family and all we have to be thankful for at the Boys & Girls Club. This past year we have been able to accomplish some amazing things. We had hoped to see 300 kids a day at the new Pennington Facility, and there were days this past summer we saw between 500-600 kids. With the addition of the new property, we are well on our way to serving over 13,000 youth, which is up considerably over last year’s total of more than 12,000.
While the opening of the William N. Pennington Facility created a great deal of excitement at the beginning of the year, we still have so much to accomplish before 2014 closes. My favorite event of the year, the Annual Awards Banquet, is just around the corner. This year’s Male and Female Youth of the Year are as incredible as any we have had in the past. The kids are poised to tell their stories about the obstacles they have overcome in their lives and how the Club and our community have helped put them on a path to success. We will also be honoring this year’s Distinguished Service Award winner, which annually goes to the organization’s top volunteer. This year’s recipient is Nick Rossi. Nick is part of a multigenerational Nevada family, runs the successful LP Insurance Services business, and supports many great causes in Northern Nevada, including the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. He joins a very prestigious list of those who have won this award in the past.
While people support the Boys & Girls Club year-round, the beginning of December also marks the beginning of our Holiday Help program. If you want your support to go directly to kids and families, then Holiday Help is the program for you. We are currently looking for individuals that want to be matched with families in need over the holidays. Last year, we were able to help hundreds of kids and families, and this year we hope to help even more. If you want to adopt a family at Christmas, call Kathleen Vanderziel at (775) 360-2450. Your support again is greatly appreciated.
If you want to make an impact in person, once again we are partnering with Bully’s Sports Bar & Grill to offer our annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Donald W. Reynolds Facility on Wednesday, November 26. If you want to volunteer your time to help serve more than 1,500 meals to those in the community that are in need of a Thanksgiving meal, then call Anne Studebaker, Volunteer Coordinator, at (775) 360-2449. Call soon, as there are limited volunteer spots available.
And finally, we are also running our annual It Just Takes One campaign. Currently, Board members are in the community asking individuals to give generously to this year’s campaign. Our goals are lofty, but there are still many more kids that we can serve. So as you reflect and give thanks for the things in your life, perhaps you can make a little room to help a child in need at the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. You will be glad that you did!
