Futsal leagues getting bigger and better
By Lauren Soulam
Earlier this year, the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows received a grant from the U.S. Soccer Foundation to purchase brand new futsal goals to improve our already growing futsal program. Over the past few years, our fall futsal league, which runs from mid-October to mid-December, has almost doubled in participants. We began the league with a little over 40 youth. Now, more than 160 youth participate in two separate leagues, ages 6-9 and ages 10-12.
Futsal has become very popular around the world within the past few years as it is a more demanding sport than regular indoor soccer. Futsal focuses on agility, coordination, and speed while promoting ball control and encouraging player creativity. We have found that kids who are in our futsal League are having a lot of fun while working on their technical skills. And, of course, they are improving their health and fitness at the same time, which is one of the main goals of the Boys & Girls Club as a whole. We know that with our new goals, futsal at the Boys & Girls Club will continue to grow in quantity and quality. We want to thank the U.S. Soccer Foundation for making this possible.
